Sun Safety on the Job

Workplace safety is a top priority for most companies particularly those with employees that have high-risk jobs whether it be drivers on the road or heavy equipment operators. But workplace safety goes beyond what may seem obvious and should include information about how to protect your skin.

In the summer months we are more mindful of the sun’s rays but sun safety truly is important year-round. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma at least once. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer.1

The CDC offers helpful information to protect your employees from skin cancer. Check out their tip sheet.

In addition to important tips and information that you should include in your training guides, consider providing sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and other protective clothing options. Don’t forget to include sun safety in your company’s reward and recognition program with on-the-spot recognition for those proactively following sun safety procedures while on the job.
