National High Five Day was started in 2002 at the University of Virginia. A group of students set up shop on the main quad of the campus and gave out high-fives and lemonade.

Something as simple as giving a high five can be powerful. Employees crave recognition. As many studies have shown, it often times ranks higher than compensation. To think that a pat on the back or a high five can be as rewarding as a paycheck is impressive.

It’s important to remember to thank and praise those who go above and beyond, or just hold the door for you when your hands are full. Being appreciated for the big, as well as the small things, can have great impact on your employees. Happy employees provide better customer service to both internal and external customers.

Its seems like a simple thing to do but saying “thank you” can boost someone’s mood and inspire them to perform at their best. It’s not always about money, sometimes it’s as easy as just being recognized.
